“Pelta” means shield in Greek and the shape of this shield that inspired this necklace is found throughout antiquity in mosaics, frescoes, and sculpture.  It was to represent the Amazon women tribe.  These mythic women were warriors who lived in an area of modern-day Turkey on the Black Sea.  The women cut off one of their breasts in order to be able to shoot their bow and arrows therefore, the “pelta” shape was to cover and protect the remaining breast.
